Red light therapy for improved mental health.

We know that bright light therapy and light boxes have shown great promise and effectiveness in combating mental health diseases. But what about red light therapy?

Dr. Marc Schoen of UCLA Medical School has 25+ years of experience treating mental health disorders. Dr. Schoen said, “In tandem with psychotherapy, using red light therapy appears to catapult patients out of an acute depressive state faster than any other modality.” Dr. Schoen has also observed that red and near-infrared light therapy improves anxiety and compulsive symptoms as well.

Although large randomized studies on using humans are still needed (two major studies are currently in progress), early research regarding the use of red and near-infrared light therapy for treating depression and anxiety disorders is very promising.

In a recent review of all existing studies on red and near-infrared light therapy and depression/anxiety disorders, researchers found that these light therapies offer a “promising treatment” for major depressive disorder, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and traumatic brain injury [1].

Several studies have indicated that people with depression have abnormal blood flow in the frontal cortex of the brain. Since red/NIR light improve blood flow and circulation to the brain, it is reasonable to believe that could be part of the mechanism at play [2,3].

What is red light therapy and how does it work?

Red light therapy works by stimulating your body’s natural self-healing process. Vital Red Light devices emit red and near-infrared light, two specific  wavelengths that are naturally emitted by the sun. In specific doses, these wavelengths have a healing effect on the body. Red light (660nm) is absorbed by your skin, leading to enhanced skin health and healing. Near infrared light (850nm), penetrates deep into your tissues, muscles, and body for inflammation and hormone support.

As your body soaks up the natural light from your red light therapy device, your mitochondria become activated in producing energy for a wide range of functions. Red light penetrates the skin at varying depths, and its therapeutic benefits occur at the cellular level. So, unlike medications that simply mask symptoms, red light works from inside out to promote health. Check out the article "Why use red light therapy?" for more information on this topic.

How red light therapy improves mental health.

While blue light therapy is often touted to reduce symptoms of winter blues and seasonal affective disorder, red light therapy can also help to improve mood and energy levels. Red light therapy works similarly to acupuncture to stimulate energy in the cells and to produce a warming reaction throughout the body.

Red light laser therapy can specifically increase sluggish energy levels (partially by working to support the thyroid), support a balanced mood, improve mental clarity and confidence, and improve general positivity, calm, and reduce anxiety. While red light therapy can have these benefits, it should never replace working with a mental health professional or other treatments for anxiety, depression, or the like. Always speak with your practitioner before trying alternative therapy like a red light laser.

Red light therapy and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If the dark winter months are a challenge for you, you are not alone. Millions of people suffer from seasonal depression (SAD) annually. Clinical research, in its initial phases, shows that red light has the ability to become a widely used, and safe treatment for clinical forms of depression. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that affects approximately 5% of all Americans. Those especially susceptible to seasonal affective disorder, living areas of the country that do not see much natural light during winter months. People live in big cities in the Northeast but do not get a healthy dosing of light in the winter suffer from this horrible disorder that manifests itself and lack of energy and depression. SAD is also called seasonal depression, winter depression, or the winter blues. In recent years, more researchers and health practitioners are using natural light treatments like red light therapy in order to combat seasonal depression, in conjunction with antidepressants and other forms of psychotherapy.

Red light therapy and depression.

Depression currently affect hundred and 21 million people worldwide, and that’s only the number of people officially diagnosed with it. The sad reality is that many people experience depression at some point in their lives and often times they don’t know what to do about it. Existing medical treatment for anxiety and depression are toxic, tendon I’m people out of their normal lives, and potentially have many other negative consequences. Although not currently proven, red light therapy does have the potential to increase the mood of patients suffering from anxiety and depression. We are looking forward to seeing how red light therapy can potentially be used in this version treatment paradigm.

Red light therapy and general well-being.

Mental health disease such as depression anxiety and bipolar disorder are taking a toll on today’s society. Red light therapy has extraordinary potential in mental health disorders. In a major mental health study conducted in 2018, researchers unanimously concluded that light therapy demonstrated antidepressant properties. These antidepressant properties had a medium to large effect size in patients with major depressive disorder [4].
